The Olive Branch Foundation
The Olive Branch Foundation was founded in 2009 with the mission to increase awareness around the need for domestic adoption and foster care. In addition to providing awareness about adoption and foster care, The Olive Branch Foundation has established a specialized fund at Voices for Children of Broward County (Voices) to provide opportunities for children in foster care in Broward County.
This year, the Annual Olive Branch Foundation Christmas Event is supporting Evan and his sister, Hallie, who is his caregiver. Eleven year-old Evan was introduced to Voices last month after being removed from his mother’s care over the summer. Evan is bright, smart, and has such an upbeat attitude considering the events in his life that have led to his removal. From a young age, Evan has been a victim of tremendous physical and emotional abuse by his mother. Often times he was manipulated into participating in criminal activity and told to steal from stores and other retailers to help support his mother’s substance abuse. She would frequently use Evan to hide items under his clothes, in his socks and shoes, and even his backpack. When Evan refused to aid in her addiction, she would physically assault him, leaving him with welts and bruises across his body. At one point, his mother stopped sending him to school which resulted in over a year and a half of missed education. But even through this, Evan learned ways to keep himself engaged in learning by teaching himself how to code and has become quite the expert! When he was removed from his mother’s care, he was placed with his older sister who also experienced similar abuse by their mother when she was a child which ultimately resulted in her upbringing in the foster care system as well. Hallie, Evan’s sister, is in the process of adopting her little brother in hope to give him a life experience that he deserves, free of abuse. But the last few months have been a bit challenging for Hallie and Evan. With COVID-19, Hallie’s employer had been closed for some weeks and she was faced with some financial struggles. While her place of employment has since reopened, Hallie and her partner are newly pregnant with their first child and her pregnancy has forced her to take unpaid time off to attend doctor’s appointments or to recover from illness associated with her pregnancy. This has certainly caused additional strain on the family to help them stay afloat. They have explored all avenues for resources to help pay their rent and utilities, but unfortunately, they’ve had no success. Not only would this family benefit from some holiday cheer, they could certainly use financial assistance to help make ends meet during this unprecedented time.
