We can give you many ways to contribute to this amazing cause through Voices for Children of Broward County. But instead we’d like to share a real life story. Here is Donna’s story about how she became a Guardian ad Litem for abused, abandoned and neglected children.

 

Donna, A volunteer Guardian ad Litem

I worked in corporate America for over 25 years and decided to retire in 2012, I had heard about the Guardian Ad Litem program about 15 years before, and I knew since the day I heard about them that it was going to be my ‘job’ after I retired. I have a personal understanding of how a child feels when there is a tragic separation from parents. I was separated from my mother and brother when I was just 2 years old. and I was reunified with them when I was 11. Our reunifications were just short sporadic visits, so I know firsthand how hard it is as a kid to go through what some of these kids go through. I have three adult kids, and I can’t imagine being separated from them when they were toddlers. I also understand a bit about what some of the parents might go through. The Guardian Ad Litem Program offers me an opportunity to make a difference in a child’s life. I can’t think of a more satisfying effort, than working for these kids that due to no fault of their own find themselves suffering.

 

Although these stories are often sad, our goal at Voices for Children is to help children in the dependency system feel like they have someone on their side. For many of us it can be hard to imagine not having loving parents to lean on, a safe home and steady meals. The reality is, many children in Broward County are suffering and need our help.
