April was first declared Child Abuse Prevention Month by presidential proclamation in 1983. Since then, April has been a time to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together to prevent child abuse, and to promote the social and emotional well-being of children and families. During the month of April and throughout the year, communities are encouraged to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities and promote prevention across the country.
Voices for Children of Broward County, in partnership with the 17th Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program, HANDY and Children’s Services Council a series of local events, workshops, and activities are held throughout the month of April to share child abuse and neglect prevention awareness strategies and activities as well to promote prevention across the county.
During the month, you can make a big difference through small acts that help protect children, strengthen families, promote traits that help protect families — and, ultimately, prevent the abuse and neglect of children.

Make a Difference
During the month, you can make a BIG difference through small acts that help protect children, strengthen families, promote traits that help protect families — and, ultimately, prevent the abuse and neglect of children. Many of our children are in need of healthy foods, school supplies and opportunities to engage in fun childhood activities.
We are seeking gift cards from the following stores:
- Publix – for families to purchase healthy foods for the child
- Target – for a child to get school supplies and school clothing
- MasterCard/Visa/American Express – for a child to be able to experience a passion of his or hers, such as basketball or dance classes
