On June 19, I spent the morning aboard a fishing boat with a group of children in foster care.

For many of them, it was their first time fishing and their first time out on the ocean. As I watched them cast their lines, celebrate each catch, and cheer one another on, I was reminded of something we don’t talk about enough in child welfare.

When people think about supporting children in foster care, they often think about immediate needs.

We are thrilled to announce that Voices for Children of Broward County has been selected as one of only 76 nonprofits across the United States—and one of just 7 in South Florida—to receive The Comcast NBCUniversal Foundation’s 2024 Local Impact Grant. The foundation is granting $2.5 million this year to nonprofits that are making significant strides in strengthening our communities.

By winning this competitive grant, we are empowered to further our mission of driving our local communities forward and fostering a culture of equity and inclusion. With this newly awarded grant, we will be able to continue providing vital support and resources to children in foster care, ensuring they have the opportunity to thrive.

Backpacks, Smiles, and Superheroes: Making Back-to-School Dreams Come True for Foster Kids

Imagine starting a new school year without the excitement of picking out your own backpack or choosing your first-day-of-school outfit. For many children in foster care, this is a reality. But this back-to-school season, Voices for Children of Broward County set out to change that.

We hosted two incredible events that gave over 220 children in foster care the chance to experience the joy of being fully prepared and confident as they head back to school. These events weren’t just about providing supplies – they were about giving these kids a sense of ownership, empowerment, and a little bit of normalcy that every child deserves.

On December 2, 2023, an extraordinary collaboration between Voices for Children of Broward County and Voices for Children Foundation brought the magic of Disney to life for children in foster care. This special day at Walt Disney World was more than just a trip to the Happiest Place on Earth—it was a transformative experience that left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone involved.

United by a shared mission to create lasting memories, our organizations, supported by the incredible generosity of our community of donors, turned this dream into a reality. From the moment the children set foot in the park to the final glimpse of the iconic castle, the day was filled with pure joy, laughter, and smiles that will be remembered for a lifetime.
